History of Victoria Park
Victoria Park was formally established in 1897, named to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria's reign. Before that, the land had served as a research field connected to the Hakgala Botanical Garden nearby, reflecting Nuwara Eliya's role as a British hill-station retreat during the colonial period.
Nuwara Eliya itself was developed by the British in the 19th century as a cool-climate escape from the coastal heat, nicknamed "Little England" for its Tudor-style buildings, golf course, and racecourse. Victoria Park was part of that project — a formal, English-style public garden dropped into the middle of the town, complete with a clock tower at the entrance that still stands today.
The park has stayed largely in its original form: 27 acres, crossed by the Nanu Oya stream, which forms several small ponds and adds to the reason migratory birds use it as a stopover.
