Amazing Train Journeys

The famous train ride from Kandy to Ella is especially beautiful with clear skies and green landscapes.

If you’re planning a trip to Sri Lanka in March, you probably have a lot of questions. Is it a good time to visit? What are the best places to explore during this month? Is a safari worth it, or should you focus more on cultural experiences?

Well don’t worry, I’m here to clear up those doubts and help you plan a trip to Sri Lanka that actually makes sense for you.

The Weather In March Across Sri Lanka

The weather in March is relatively better throughout the entirety of Sri Lanka. It is a dry month with the temperature being around 30°C. This temperature is ideal for swimming and snorkeling. The hilly areas around Nuwara Eliya and Ella are much cooler by comparison, offering a refreshing break from the heat.

Top Things to Do in Sri Lanka in March

Whale Watching in Mirissa

March is one the best months for watching whales in the south coast. There are multiple boats that leave from Mirissa everyday in the early morning. You can catch sightings of blue whales, sperm whales, dolphins and more during this season. If sea travel suits you, it’s one of the most memorable wildlife experiences on the island.

Safari Adventures: Yala & Beyond

As March is considered a dry season, wildlife is easier to view in parks. Some of the national parks for this are Yala and Wilpattu. You can see leopards, elephants, sloth bears and birdlife. Yala is the most famous for leopard sightings, while Udawalawe is excellent for elephants.

Beaches, Surfing & Sea Life

The southern and western shores from Unawatuna to Bentota are ideal for surfing, paddleboarding, snorkeling and turtle spotting. The ocean is warmer and calmer than during the monsoon months, so it’s easy to hop between beaches in one day.

Hill Country Escapes

March is fine for exploring central highland gems like Ella, Nuwara Eliya and Horton Plains. Take scenic train journeys, wander tea estates and breathe cool mountain air. The Nilgiri and Main Range views around Ella Rock and the Nine Arch Bridge are especially sharp on clear March days.
