Sri LankaWhat makes this place worth the journey.
Perched above the mirror-still waters of Gregory Lake, Jetwing Broomfield Bungalow captures the quiet charm of Ceylon’s highlands.
Built more than a century ago, this colonial home has been reborn into a sanctuary of slow luxury — where every creak of timber tells a story, and mist drifts like poetry through the gardens.
“In the hills, silence has texture — and it feels like this.”
The reasons travellers book around this place.
Jetwing Broomfield Bungalow once hosted Ceylon’s colonial elite — tea planters, governors, and travellers seeking refuge in the cool highlands.
Today, it has been restored with grace: old fireplaces glow beneath handwoven blankets, and rose gardens spill over with dew and nostalgia.
Sithiyam Insider: “Here, time doesn’t stop — it simply slows to the rhythm of tea steam.”
With panoramic views of Gregory Lake, the bungalow is a private six-room retreat — a place to read, wander, and remember.
The dry, bright window and the months to sit out.
From Colombo airport (CMB), three good ways down the coast.
Roughly 2–2½ hrs on the E01 Southern Expressway from the airport. The way we send most guests — door to door, stop when you like.
The Colombo–Matara line hugs the shore for stretches. Slower and less predictable, but a lovely ride if you sit on the right, ocean side.
Air-conditioned coaches run Colombo–Galle in about two hours for a few dollars. Frequent, but no help with bags or timing.
What the rooms are like.
Each of the six rooms carries a name, a view, and a story:
mahogany floors, four-poster beds, and fireplaces that light up misty evenings.
Pro Tip: Ask for the Master Suite — the view of Gregory Lake at dawn is reason enough to linger another night.
What is worth your time from here.
A slow loop of the sea walls as the light goes — lighthouse, Flag Rock, the mosque, and cricket on the green below. The definitive Galle hour.
Dutch Reformed Church, the Maritime Museum, gem and jewellery ateliers, and a dozen galleries and concept stores between Pedlar and Church streets.
A sheltered, palm-backed crescent — the south coast's easiest swimming beach, with reef snorkelling at the Jungle Beach end.
Forty minutes east, small-boat trips head out at dawn for blue and sperm whales passing the continental shelf.
A closer look, frame by frame.
Where to eat and drink at the hotel.
Poonie's Kitchen, Pedlar's Inn and a dozen café courtyards for a long morning between the lanes.
Grilled catch and cold beers at the beach shacks of Unawatuna and Dalawella, a short tuk-tuk from the walls.
The Tuna & The Crab or Fort Bazaar for a dressed-up evening — book ahead in season.
Dining at Broomfield is an affair of warmth and simplicity — no menus, only conversations.
Your butler and chef curate meals from seasonal produce, much of it sourced from the bungalow’s gardens and neighbouring farms.
